  1. Information about the city of Basel

The ESH Congress 2027 will take place in Basel, Switzerland’s third-largest city after Zurich and Geneva. Around 170,000 people live in Basel, and more than half a million people live in the surrounding metropolitan area. Known worldwide as the “City of Museums,” Basel stands at the heart of Switzerland’s cultural scene.

Basel blends history, culture, and innovation in a lively and welcoming way. Visitors stroll through medieval alleyways, explore charming squares, and discover more than 200 fountains across the city. In addition, landmarks such as the Town Hall and the Basel Minster reflect Basel’s rich heritage. At the same time, bold modern architecture and a dynamic art scene give the city a fresh and creative energy.

Moreover, Basel offers world-class museums, excellent restaurants, and a vibrant riverside atmosphere. During the warmer months, life moves to the Rhine River. Locals and visitors swim in the Rhine (“Rheinschwimmen”), take traditional Rhine ferries across the water, or enjoy different kinds of water sports. Along the riverbanks, cafés, restaurants, and cultural venues create a relaxed and social atmosphere. As a result, Basel combines urban life with a strong connection to nature and culture.
