  1. Information about the city of Bologna

Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region and has about 400,000 residents in the city itself. Nearly one million people live in the wider metropolitan area. Because of this, Bologna ranks among Italy’s major urban centres. Its history reaches back to at least 1000 BC, and the city has played an important cultural and social role throughout the centuries.

Today, Bologna thrives as a lively centre for art, culture and academic life. The city showcases impressive historic buildings and a harmonious architectural style. In addition, many cultural and political institutions shape its character. Bologna also operates one of Europe’s leading exhibition and trade fair districts. Thanks to its rich cultural life, the city earned the title of European Capital of Culture in 2000, and UNESCO recognised it as a “City of Music” in 2006. The historic centre remains one of the best-preserved medieval districts in the world. Furthermore, its famous porticoes stretch for around 40 kilometres, and the city continues its effort to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for them.
