ESCMID
The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, in short ESCMID, is organizing their 36st gathering on 17-21 April 2026 in Munich, Germany. ESCMID takes place annually and is recognized by academia, the clinical setting and industry as the largest European congress for the presentation and discussion of research in the fields of clinical microbiology and infection. Initially a biannual congress, ESCMID became an annual event after taking place in Berlin in 1999. ESCMID now attracts around 10,000 participants every year. The number of submitted abstracts has risen to over 3,000 of which 65% are accepted for oral or poster presentation.

This year’s ESCMID congress venue will be Munich, the capital of Bavaria and one of Germany’s most important cultural and economic centers. The city features many historical buildings and squares. These include Marienplatz with the new and old city halls, the Theatiner Church, Odeonsplatz, and several picture galleries.
Munich residents often relax in the English Garden, the largest urban park in Europe. It offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. They also enjoy the green floodplains along the River Isar. No other German city balances so many contrasts.
Munich is both a bustling metropolis and a green oasis. It blends tradition with modernity, and local identity with a global outlook. Of course, the city is famous for Oktoberfest, the largest Volksfest (beer festival and traveling funfair). This 16- to 18-day folk festival runs annually from mid or late September to the first weekend in October. Over six million people from around the world attend every year.
The city is also known for its breweries. Weissbier (or Weizenbier, wheat beer) is a Bavarian specialty not to miss.
