The 39th European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) congress will be held from 10 – 14 October 2026 in Lisbon, Portugal. The annual congress ESICM attracts more than 5,000 intensivists, anesthesiologists, trainees, nurses and medical support staff from every continent and more than 100 countries. This exceptional diversity makes LIVES a place to absorb the latest insights and improve patient care through multidisciplinary discussions and lectures, interactive courses, demonstrations of the latest technologies, and simulation exercises. Attendees to ESICM 2026 will have the opportunity to participate in carefully planned events to further their knowledge, learn about the latest research advances, and network with their peers.
This year’s host city of the 39th annual congress is Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal and the most visited of the small country. Lisbon’s urban area extends beyond the city’s administrative limits with a population of around 2.7 million people. The city lies on the Atlantic coast and the River Tagus. Lisbon is important in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism which makes it a global city. It is one of the major economic centers on the continent, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on Europe’s Atlantic coast. Besides the modern progress, Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries.
