Information about the city of Lisbon

The 96th EAS Congress 2028 will take place in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. The city lies at the mouth of the Tagus River and serves as Portugal’s political, cultural, and economic center. In addition, Lisbon offers a mild Atlantic climate. Summers stay mostly dry and pleasant because cool Atlantic breezes moderate the temperatures. Meanwhile, winters remain mild, and temperatures rarely fall below freezing.

Visitors especially enjoy exploring Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district. Its narrow streets, colorful houses, and cobblestone alleys create a unique atmosphere full of history and charm. From there, visitors can walk up to the Castle of São Jorge and enjoy panoramic views across Lisbon and the Tagus River. Furthermore, the area around the castle hosts lively flea markets, where visitors can browse antiques, vintage treasures, and local goods.

Lisbon also stands out for its rich culinary traditions. For example, visitors should not miss the famous Pastéis de Belém or the widely loved Pastéis de Nata. Bakers fill these small puff pastries with creamy vanilla custard, bake them until golden brown, and often serve them with powdered sugar and cinnamon. In addition, coffee culture plays an important role in daily life across Portugal. Although a Portuguese princess from the House of House of Braganza introduced tea to England centuries ago, most Portuguese people now prefer coffee. Therefore, when locals order a “café,” they usually expect a strong espresso rather than filter coffee.

Overview of the event

The European Atherosclerosis Society organizes the EAS Congress as a leading platform for basic, translational, and clinical research on atherosclerosis and related vascular diseases. The Congress 2028 will run from 21 to 24 of May in Gothenburg.
