Turn old into new

…because passing on cultural heritage is also part of sustainability

Demolishing an old house to build a new one according to ecological standards is often the cheapest, but not necessarily the most sustainable way. Restoration and renovation prevent decay and demolition, and newly produced building materials often become almost superfluous. Some examples have impressed us in this respect:

Magazin Heeresbäckerei
The buildings made of yellow clinker were built some time around 1890 as an ensemble of granary, bakery and mill. They covered the need for commission bread of the Berlin garrison. The magazine in the Heeresbäckerei is characterized by its strong commitment to sustainability. During the renovation process, sustainable practices were employed to minimize negative impacts on the environment. The event location features energy-efficient lighting systems designed to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Whenever possible, environmentally friendly materials were used to conserve resources and reduce waste. This venue not only offers a space rich in history but also contributes to a more sustainable future for the event industry. In addition to the event spaces “Kontor” and “Heeresbäckerei”, one will also find another room at this special location: the Loft. Located directly above the main hall on the first floor, the atmosphere of former times meets modern design.

Wilmina Hotel
The Wilmina Hotel on Berlin’s Kantstrasse is an example of the successful fusion of history, sustainability and architectural ingenuity. The architectural firm Grüntuch Ernst has transformed a former prison with a dark past into a vibrant community space with an emphasis on sustainability. This remarkable transformation earned them the German Sustainability Award for Architecture 2022. The essence of the project lies in “reprogramming” the use of the site and carefully preserving the existing structures, complemented by lush green spaces that contrast with the building’s historic façade. Surrounded by luscious gardens and courtyards that flow into one another the 44 rooms of the Wilmina and its Restaurant Lovis welcome their guests.

Atelier Gardens
The BUFA film studio remake “Atelier Gardens” project envisions a sustainable rejuvenation of the Union Film Studios in Berlin, known for its cinematic heritage of more than 100 years of film history . By redesigning iconic structures such as “Haus 1” and Studio 1, the project combines the preservation of historic fabric with modern, environmentally friendly design elements. Featuring thoughtful architectural adaptation and the integration of sustainable elements, this innovative project reflects a commitment to both honoring the past and shaping an environmentally conscious future. Sustainability measures are well incorporated, such as eco-toilets, rainwater collection and water recycling, and improved natural ventilation. It is a workspace and event venue for culture & creativity.

KantGaragen
Stilwerk, known for its focus on design and lifestyle, has been transforming a historic 1930s high-rise garage into a modern design center spanning four floors. It houses interior design and lifestyle brands, retailers and services. In addition, there is retail and restaurant space on the second floor and an event space on the rooftop. A luxury penthouse apartment is available for rent on the sixth floor, complemented by the Stilwerk Hotel KantGaragen. This innovative integration of showroom and hotel is a milestone in the history of Stilwerk and offers a holistic design experience combining art, culture, gastronomy and hospitality.  One very special experience when shopping: The shopping areas are located on the former spiral driveway, which architecture fans like to call the Guggenheim ramp.

These projects demonstrate the power of restoration and adaptive reuse to minimise waste, reduce carbon footprints, and give new life to historic structures. By embracing environmentally conscious practices and innovative design, they not only honor their respective histories, but also establish the foundations for a more sustainable and vibrant world.
