…an all-rounder that is omnipresent during events
Potatoes are sustainable, especially if they come from German cultivation. Relatively little water is needed to grow potatoes. In Germany, potatoes grow almost exclusively with rainwater – this is also reflected in their ecological footprint. They contain many nutrients, can protect the cells, improve digestion and blood sugar levels, fill you up, prevent cravings and are gluten-free. They are an indispensable part of the menu, they can be used in a variety of ways, they accompany us through history and are also suitable for competitions!
The domestication of the potato, in Germany also known as “earth apple”, in the Andes of South American dates back at least 4000 years. But it was not until 1647 that the nightshade plant found its way into Upper Franconia, and it was not until 1756 that the Prussian King Frederick the Great (affectionately called “Alter Fritz”) issued the “Potato Order”. Every farmer was forced to plant the potato under threat of punishment. This new food product should provide more security from famine. His grave on the terrace of Sanssouci is regularly decorated with potatoes – after all, we have him to thank for the potato. So, one can say with a clear conscience that the potato is ideal for a cultural program!
Not only do potato varieties have enchanting names, such as Linda, Sieglinde, Laura, Agata or Lady Christl, there are over 5000 different sorts worldwide. You can choose between waxy or floury varieties, and you can create entire menus with them, be it the famous Swiss Rösti, fritters, salads, soups, or a variety of side dishes from the famous French fries to gratins, purees, dumplings, or boiled and salted potatoes. A potato cake or pancake is even suitable for dessert. But delicious biscuits can also be made from potato starch. Last but not least, potato flour is particularly suitable for gluten-free baking.
The potato can even be used in the areas of skill and team building. For example, there is the potato peeling competition. The aim of this competition is to cleanly peel as many potatoes as possible in a given time. Whoever has peeled the most grams of potatoes, wins. A team sport with obstacles would be the potato run. Each player holds a tablespoon with a potato on it. One goes around a turning point and returns to the starting line. There, the next team member takes over the potato spoon and sets off for the relay race. Building a potato pyramid is ideal for any conference break… who can cleanly process 1.5 kg of potatoes into a pyramid the quickest?
